MINUTES

 

For July 14, 2015

 

CALL TO ORDER

The meeting was called to order by Alamo AFA Chapter President Paul Weseloh at 1730 hours. The meeting was held in the San Antonio Chamber of Commerce North Business Center.  Due to power outage in building the meeting was expedited

 

ATTENDANCE

The following individuals signed in as attending: Paul Weseloh, Debbie Landry, Alan Beaty, Gary Copsey, Katie McCool, Thomas Rioux, Ed Garland, April Howard, Estrid Serrano, Hurley Brett, Darin Defendorf, J. Sean Habina, Christopher Hinds, Joan Lopez, Bill Croom, David Garver, Douglas Nelson, and Tom Peterson.

 

AWARDS

Paul Weseloh then presented the Alamo AEF Joan Lopez Family Scholarship Award to Courtney Self. This award is named in recognition of Joan Lopez’s many years of contributions to the local and Texas State AFA organizations.

 

TREASURER’S REPORT

Chapter treasurer Alan Beaty reported that the chapter finances are in line with budgetary projections.

 

MEETING MINUTES

Minutes for the June 16 General Membership Executive Committee meeting were reviewed.  A motion was made and seconded to approve minutes as written.  Motion was approved by those present.

 

AFA–E HERITAGE RIDE

Katie McCool reported that the Heritage Motorcycle ride fund raiser went well with good weather, no incidents, and successful t-shirt sales.

 

CHAPTER AEROSPACE EDUCATION FOUNDATION (AEF) REPORT

There were no updates presented for this meeting.

 

COMMUNITY PARTNERS

Darin Defendorf reported that he is sending out outreach letters for potential new partners.  He also briefed on preparations for the next golf tournament.

AFA-E

David Garver reported that plans continue for an AFA-E membership breakfast to be held at Lackland in one of the barracks. 

 

COMBAT BREAKFAST

This year’s combat breakfast is scheduled for November 3 and the Randolph Kendrick Club has been reserved for that date.  Sponsor organization for this event is Air Force Recruiting service with MSgt Floro as POC.

 

 

 

 

AFA TEXAS UPDATE

Gary Copsey, AFA Texas President, explained that Mike Nishimuta, a long time contributor and leader to AFA at the local and state level, passed away in May after a short bout with cancer. He gave a brief rundown of Mike Nishimuta's accomplishments in AFA and the AF, and displayed a flag box that holds a US flag that was flown over the AF Memorial in Mike's honor on June 6th, the 42nd anniversary of his graduation and commissioning from the AF Academy. He stated that the flag will be sent to his wife in Colorado Springs.

 

Gary gave a short synopsis of the National Awards and stated that Texas did well in that we received all the Medal of Merits (MoMs) we requested plus more than the usual share of Exceptional Service Awards (ESAs). He attributed that to the great work of the people and thanked the chapter leadership for submitting deserving folks.

 

Finally, he explained that there are a number of new training modules available on the AFA website that chapter leaders should review.

CALL TO ORDER

 

The meeting was called to order by Alamo AFA Chapter Vice President Debbie Landry at 1730 hours. The meeting was held in the San Antonio Chamber of Commerce North Business Center.

 

ATTENDANCE

The following individuals signed in as attending: Debbie Landry, Alan Beaty, Dave Pope, Joe Peltier, Christopher Hinds, Nick Carter, Laura Betcher, Wade Roberts, Joan Lopez, Al Swaim, Gary Copsey, Bill Croom, David Garver, Ed Garland, John Thurman, Katie McCool, Ray Cornish, Terry LaBreck, Douglas Nelson, and Tom Peterson.

 

IN REMEMBERANCE

A moment of silence was held to honor the passing of former chapter member Michael P. Nishimuta who passed away on Wednesday, May 6th.  Mike was a long-time supporter of the chapter and had assisted with the chapter web site, newsletter and symposiums.

 

AWARDS

Dave Pope presented the Tyler Voss AEF Education Award.  Bill Croom then presented the BJ Bjorge award to Andrew Trevor.  This was the first time this award has been awarded.

Alan Beaty gave the treasurer’s report. Current expenditures are on track with budget projections.

Minutes for the April 14 General Membership Executive Committee meeting were reviewed.  A motion was made and seconded to approve minutes as written.  Motion was approved by those present.

 

Alamo AFA 1st ANNUAL HERITAGE MOTORCYCLE RIDE

Katie McCool reported on the AFA motorcycle heritage ride.  Proceeds of the ride will benefit the Airman Heritage Museum with overhead costs being underwritten by several local organizations. Due to unfavorable weather forecast for the original event the date was been changed to June 13.

 

MEMBERSHIP

Katie McCool reported on several membership initiatives being investigated at the National AFA level.

 

COMBAT BREAKFAST

Debbie Landry reported that his year’s combat breakfast is scheduled for November 3 and the Randolph Kendrick Club has been reserved for that date.  Debbie is working to find a military organization to be this year’s event host.

 

AFA-E

David Garver reported that plans are under way for another mixer to be held in October.

 

 

 

TEXAS STATE AFA MEETING UPDATE

Gary Copsey reported that the July 2015 state AFA meeting will be held in Dallas from the 16 through the 18.  Also, Texas State AFA has a new VP for Government/Industry Relations.  Molly May Potter is a wounded Airman and medically retired captain.  She will also be involved in the state wounded airman program.

 

CHAPTER AEROSPACE EDUCATION FOUNDATION (AEF) REPORT

Dave Pope reported that the chapter AEF executives have meet since last meeting.

 

AIRMAN HERITAGE FOUNDATION

Al Swaim reported that the historical scrap book on first Air Force Day Flight Event at Randolph AFB which was donated to the chapter last year has been presented to and accepted by the Airman Heritage Museum.

AWARDS

Bill Croom then presented the Alamo AEF Bill Croom Family Scholarship Award to Drew Defendorf. This award is named in recognition of Mr. Croom ‘s many years of contributions to the local and national AFA organizations.

 

TREASURER’S REPORT

The treasurer was not present so no formal report was made.

 

MEETING MINUTES

Minutes for the May 19 General Membership Executive Committee meeting were reviewed.  A motion was made and seconded to approve minutes as written.  Motion was approved by those present.

 

COMBAT BREAKFAST

Debbie Landry and Paul Weseloh attended the second Celebrate America’s Military Week (CAM) organizational meeting.  This year’s combat breakfast is scheduled for November 3 and the Randolph Kendrick Club has been reserved for that date.  We are the only CAM event currently scheduled for that day.  Debbie is working to find a military organization to be this year’s event host.  The Randolph Air Show precedes the CAM kickoff and Sean Habina volunteered to organize and set up the Alamo AFA Chapter booth for this event.

 

CHAPTER AEROSPACE EDUCATION FOUNDATION (AEF) REPORT

Dave Pope had no updates for this meeting.

 

COMMUNITY PARTNERS

MEMBERSHIP

Debbie Landry reported that AFA National is investigating the pros and cons of proposals to issue some free e-mail memberships. 

 

AFA-E

David Garver reported that plans are under way for an AFA-E membership breakfast to be held at Lackland in one of the barracks.  Debbie Landry mentioned that, with CMSgt McCool now stationed at Randolph, a Randolph AFA-E organization is being considered.

 

TEXAS STATE AFA MEETING UPDATE

Joan Lopez reported that the July 2015 Texas State AFA meeting will be held in Dallas from the 16 through the 18

 

HERITAGE FLIGHT

Sean Habina briefed on the upcoming Heritage Flight which helps WWII veterans visit the WWII memorial in Washington DC.  As part of the program the veterans traveling to DC are given a document holder that they can wear around their neck to hold tickets and other travel documents as necessary.  Sean requested chapter consider providing about 60 of these document holders which can be embossed with chapter information.  Sean will get specific information on cost and availability and contact chapter leadership for possible action on this.

Sean also mentioned that she presented the chapter wreath at the Fort San Houston Cemetery Memorial Day ceremony.

Minutes for the March 10 General Membership Executive Committee meeting were reviewed.  A motion was made and seconded to approve minutes as written.  Motion was approved by those present.

 

TEXAS STATE AFA MEETING UPDATE

Ed Garland reported that state AFA is currently selecting new nominees for the AFA National yearlong Emerging Leader Program.  Ten members nationwide each year are selected for the year long program.  The July 2015 state AFA meeting will be held in Dallas from the 16 through the 18.  The fall meeting will be October in Del Rio.

 

CHAPTER AEROSPACE EDUCATION FOUNDATION (AEF) REPORT

Paul Weseloh reported for Dave Pope who could not make this meeting.  The chapter AEF executives will meet next week to select the winners of the Family Education Awards.

 

CELEBRATE AMERICA’S MILITARY

Paul Weseloh will attend the first planning meeting for the San Antonio Chamber of Commerce Celebrate America’s Military program scheduled for November this year.  Paul will be looking for someone to attend future meetings and coordinate our chapter participation in these activities.

 

MEMBERSHIP

Paul Weseloh reported that in March of this year the chapter gained 8 new members.  Chief McCool will be looking at ways to maintain that momentum.

 

COMMUNITY PARTNERS

Darren Defendorf sent a report that he has developed a new bi-fold handout for prospective community partners.  It reflects not only National AFA objectives but Alamo Chapter objectives and activities as well.  At the May meeting he will be presenting an update on the proposed golf tournament fund raiser.

 

 

 

AFA-E

David Garver reported that while gathering the banquet table decorations from the chapter storage area they came across files containing Alamo AFA historical documents back to 1962.  He is working to digitize these files so that they will not be lost and members can use them for reference.

Chief Cornish reported that the foundation golf tournament was a success.  They are planning a book signing at museum and National AFA has indicated they are looking at ways to support her foundation and museum.

 

CYBER PATRIOT

Chris Cook gave an overall update on local cyber patriot activities.
